My name is Laura Fenamore and I want to share my story with you.
By reading about my journey, you'll see that YOU too can change your life. Feel good about yourself. Love yourself and in the process release those unwanted pounds that have been holding you hostage all these years.
My journey wasn't an easy one. I still have the memories of going to bars as a fat girl with all of my skinny, gorgeous friends feeling like a total loser. As if that was not hard enough, people would validate it by saying things to my girlfriends like, “Who’s the fat chick?”
This really happened to me …more than once in fact. And if people did not say it…it did not matter. I felt horrible inside. Internal fear and insecurity ran my life.
I remember staying home because I did not want to be seen.
I remember it like it was yesterday, making excuses and stories for not going out because the possibility of being humiliated was too great.
I remember being mortified about going to restaurants and social gatherings. I was so afraid of what people might be thinking
when I put food on my plate. When in fact the self-criticism coming
from me was more violent than anything anyone would have imposed on me.
"I was always the fat girl..."
I remember asking for “diet food.” I’ll have cottage cheese, grapefuit and diet soda -- when I was hungry and really wanted something more substantial. And then how I’d lie to others about “hardly eating anything,” only to go home and binge my brains out… on nachos, pizza, burritos…
I was always the fat girl
who hung out with people who were smaller and thinner than me…and it
made me feel so horrible about myself…really horrible…and yet I kept
attracting people to my life that were thinner, smarter, prettier for me
to feel worse about me. It fostered my inability to accept and love myself for who I was.
I remember waking up every morning feeling unlovable, unworthyand alone no matter how social I was or no matter how many friends I had in my life.
I remember obsessing daily about why others were worthy of love and I was not.
I remember obsessing daily about how I would never heal.
Internal fear and insecurity ran my life.
I have no
more shame about saying how it was because that got me to where I am
today. It was from those dark places that I was able to access my
light.
And as cliché as that may sound, it is real and it is my story and who I am…
I was a compulsive eater out of my mother’s womb.
"On the outside I always appeared to have it together... Inside I was dying."
The youngest of 8, the world was definitely not safe for me and I used food to feel safe. It was that simple. I could not stop eating. When I was not eating, I was thinking about food or when I could get my next meal.
I obsessed about it regularly.
I overate, everyday and hated myself for it and could not stop.
From 7th grade until age 24, I smoked up to two packs of cigarettes a day.
I started drinking alcoholically at the age of 13 and was a “wild child”
(I used drugs and felt I could never get enough) as a teen and young
adult.
On the outside it always appeared like I had it together but on the inside I was dying.
By age 24 I
was designing my ending and talked regularly about taking my life…until a
major shift happened in my life…
A voice spoke to me and said, “Laura, you could take your
life or make my life”…it was a moment of clarity that hit like a
brick…and fortunately I chose life.
Between the
age of 24-25 I was able to radically shift my life and lose 100 lbs.
And at that time, I believed that life would be a total
breeze once I lost the weight…while it is true that it got better, it
was hardly a breeze.
I remember
being in therapy one day as a young adult. Sitting on the chair in this
beautiful bright, sunny room on Sacramento Street in San Francisco,
(known as therapists row), I said to my therapist for the umpteenth time
how much “I hated myself and my body and that was just the way it was.”
I listened to
myself explain that I was fundamentally incapable and unable to “let
go.” I was unable to “let go” of my past because my father still haunted
me and would always haunt me I remember telling her (as it were
yesterday). How many times could someone hear, you were not supposed
to be born before they believe it hook line and sinker?.
She assured me that was not true.
I, of course, did not believe her. I was so stuck in my darkness.
But I still remember how she told me that when I “let go” of some of
the things that were holding me back, I would always have the memory
inside of me to keep, and that I could always access that if I wanted
and needed to. It is a very twisted place to be. Your memories are so
dark and you want to “let go” of them and you are unsure of what will be
on the other side. There is some safety in holding on and I was torn
about what I really wanted.
I left her
office thinking, “She has no idea what she is talking about.” I was
ugly, fat, unlovable and the only memories I had were of being miserable
and scared. I wanted to let go of those childhood memories and at the
same time I was clinging to my roots. It was a bind that I remember
today, oh so well.
I had so much resistance. Suitcases of it…
My words said that I wanted to be out of my pain and suffering while my actions and my body said something else…I
was driven to eat and then hate myself for my actions. It would be
interesting (if it were possible to go back in time), to measure how
much time and energy went into hating myself, my body and how much I
ate.
Therein lies
the conflict…Actually, looking back, I was not ready to “let go.” I knew
intellectually it was possible (because people kept telling me that it
was so simple!), yet at the time it felt impossible, and the more I heard how simple it was, the more I wanted to run and scream.
Funny thing
is, the therapist who shared her thoughts about release and who told me
my memories would remain for me like a friend was spot on in retrospect.
How do I know this?
Because of all the therapists I’ve been to throughout my
life (and there have been a lot!), she stands out more than any of them.
Sometimes we learn the lesson years after we hear it. (My memory of her
is strong and will always be strong.)
“Letting go” was a process
for me which took years...it took patience, time and effort…one of the
keys was my tenacious drive to heal…that has always been a driving
force to outshine the nasty imposter that lives in me now very part time
now although for so many years it was full time.
"Being thin was not the cure for my unhappiness"
There was something no one told me back then, not this therapist or anyone, that feeling unlovable and feeling unworthy was not healed by a thin body…so I continued to search for myself and I continued to abuse myself, this time without overeating….
I continued
to obsess about food and practiced mind control on not overeating and
tortured myself with controlling food portions, etc. I was thin and
still hated my body and wondered everyday, How did that happen?
I thought thin would be my salvation but it was not.
As a thin person, I used diet pills, laxatives and bulimia
for many years to stay thin…You name it I did it and if I did not do
it, I thought about doing it.
(I know ways that those of us with eating disorders are so
violent to ourselves that would make many people cringe hearing about
it)
One of my milder darkest moments was eating out of garbage cans. I would force myself to throw food away and then crazily go find it and eat it.
I was pretty sick.
I am not suggesting that any of you have been this
sick…nor am I trying to make you feel like you are not sick enough or do
not qualify here.
I was an extreme case for a long time…so if I can radically change my life, SO CAN YOU.
How many times have you tried to change your life by going on the latest
diet or purchasing that piece of exercise equipment you saw on an
infomercial?
If you're
like most people, myself included, you went gung-ho for the first month
or week or day. You saw the weight drop off just like the program
promised it would. After awhile, though, you started to slide.
Maybe you
wanted a slice of cake at your nephew's birthday party. Maybe you
couldn't fit in exercise time because you wanted to go out for Margarita
Night with the girls. Whatever the excuses you made, you suddenly found
yourself back to your old habits and back to your old weight. You
probably even gained a few extra pounds.
That was always the case with me.
"Diets Don't Work! I know. I Tried"
For me,
losing weight was always easy. It was keeping it off that was the hard
part. And it's a vicious cycle. You go on a diet to lose weight,
severely restricting your calories (and your pleasure). But then when
you go off the diet, you binge, eating everything in sight.
When I lost the weight, I
still hated myself so it was very easy to fall back into old patterns
and habits. To my horror, I'd gain all the weight back plus more. The
constant yo-yo cycle of diets and gimmicks left me fatter and fatter
each time I tried.
When you gained all your weight back, how did you feel?
I know I felt horrible. Ashamed that I wasn't successful. Ashamed that I couldn't keep the weight off. I felt like a loser.
"I Was Ashamed I Couldn't Keep The Weight Off."
Even though I had some
success losing the weight I hated so much, I was still a wreck. My
emotional health was suffering and it was affecting my physical health.
I'd be depressed most of the time. I abused alcohol. I hated life. Most of all I hated MY life.
I knew I had to make serious changes or my addictive, abusive behavior would result in my death.
Something had to change. All the diets I tried and failed at told me the problem was more than eating too many calories.
There was a reason why I
ate too much. A reason why my body wanted to hold on to all that fat. A
reason why it craved all that food even though I was full. I needed Help!
"I Was Out Of Control. My Body Controlled Me"
I didn't have control of my body - My body controlled me!
My true permanent transformation began at age 24 when I stopped all the fad diets and workout gimmicks and truly looked inside myself for the real reasons of my obesity. I finally found the key to success.
In the process, I let go of the self-destructing force that had taken hold of my soul and discarded it.
The freedom and joy I felt with that act was indescribable.
It was a rebirth.
I lost 100 lbs. and over 21 years later I've kept it off. I love my life. I love myself and most of all I love my body.
"How Many Fad Diets Have You Tried?"
I'm sure you already know
weight loss is a multibillion dollar industry. There is a pill for
everything and a program to fit any budget. Look at the magazine and
television ads that bombard us with Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Atkins, Nutrisystem... the list goes on and on.
I've tried them...
No Carb Diet.
All Liquid Diet.
Zone Diet.
South Beach Diet.
Over the Counter Supplements.
Weight Watchers.
3 Day Diet.
Nutrisystem.
Lemonade Diet.
Grapefuit Diet.
Slim-Fast.
Fasting.
Master Cleanse.
Diet Pills.
Plus others...
They all have one thing in common. They don't address the real issues and because of that they are all designed to fail
Here's what I learned about diets.
Low Calorie diets don't work.
All they do is starve your body and then your metabolism adjusts itself
to burn fewer calories. You want to increase your metabolism so your
body burns more calories not fewer. Your body needs fuel to function and
calories are the fuel so low calorie diets don't work.
Low fat diets don't work.
Just like calories, your body needs certain types of fat. Fat is
essential for healthy weight loss. Besides the psychological games low
fat diets play are designed to sabotage your weight loss. We THINK we
can eat more because its Low Fat.
Low carb diets don't work
either because our body needs carbs for energy. Without energy you
can't burn calories. A low carb diet is another unhealthy choice and one
designed to fail.

Americans is on a diet at any given time. If these programs were
successful there wouldn't be the obesity epidemic we have in America
today.
Just pick up a magazine, newspaper or watch the television and you will hear the stories of those trying to loose weight.
From celebrities to children, our weight issues have exceeded epidemic proportions.

Deep down in your soul you know the solution involves more than counting calories.
